HPREP Teaches High School Students Possibilities at UAMS

More than 100 Arkansas high school students were on campus Feb. 25 to learn about education opportunities and health care careers.

The day-long Health Professions Recruitment and Exposure Program (HPREP) was sponsored by the UAMS Center for Diversity Affairs and the UAMS chapter of the Student National Medical Association.

Students rotated through several interactive stations in the Simulation Center at UAMS and respiratory lab, and also completed gross anatomy and clinical skills activities. Students from the UAMS Graduate School and colleges of Pharmacy, Medicine, Public Health, Nursing and Health Professions participated in a lunchtime panel that allowed students to learn more about daily activities and routines for college students and ask questions.

“We were so excited to have so many students from all backgrounds come to UAMS for the day, and we hope that this inspires and motivates them to pursue a career in a health profession,” said Amanda Compadre, a third-year medical student at UAMS and chair of the event. “We need more diversity in health care and the only way we can accomplish this is by investing in our youth.”

HPREP is an outreach program that aims to expose high school students to science-related activities, including education and career opportunities. It targets underrepresented minority students, including African-Americans, Hispanics and Native Americans.
